New 3D Dental Imaging comes to The Big Island, replacing the old 2D x-rays and greatly increasing diagnostic accuracy.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does it take?
The short answer is about 10 minutes. It takes about 90 seconds to scan each jaw; that means the actual scan time for both the upper and lower jaw, combined, is about 3 minutes. It will also take a few minutes to get the 3D Imaging system adjusted for your height as well as for your bite. Once the scans are completed, they are digitally "stitched" together by the computer. Each jaw takes about 90 seconds stitch-time before the full view of the entire jaw is displayed on the computer screen. So, 3 minutes total per jaw plus a few minutes setup time, start to finish, takes about 10-12 minutes.
- How do the radiation levels compare to conventional 2D panorex and other 3D Imaging systems currently being used?
This specific 3D imaging system (The Kodak 9000 3D Cone Beam Extraoral Imaging System) is only slightly more than a conventional 2D panorex and as much as 80% lower than other 3D systems. And because the Kodak 9000 3D Images are easier to explain, Dr Greco finds that patients can actually see where their problems areas are and therefore better know where to focus their oral hygiene efforts.
- Will I feel any discomfort?
No, you won't feel anything. You'll only hear a pleasant hum as the 3D Imaging system makes its 360 degree scan.
- Can my Dentist refer me to you?
Yes, your dentist can refer you, or you can come in on your own.
- Where is the 3D Imaging system located?
The scanner is located our Waimea / Kamuiela office located in the Carter Center at: 65-1230 Mamalahoa Highway, C-10.
Follow this link for a Map to this location.
- Who actually performs the scan?
The scan is performed by one of our trained technicians, then Dr. Greco does a reading (interpretation/explanation). It is customary to send a copy to your dentist unless you prefer otherwise.
- Do I receive a copy of the scan for my own records.
Yes. You will be given a CD copy of the scan before you leave the office. Dr. Greco will also email you a reading (explanation & interpretation) of your scans.
- How much does it cost?
The cost of a full scan (upper and lower jaw) is $400. This includes a formal reading (interpretation/explanation) by Dr. Greco that specifically focuses on the bone to tooth structure. If there is a specific area of concern (such as a salivary stone in the duct, bone loss around a tooth or whether or not there is enough bone structure to be able to receive an implant), Dr. Greco will focus her reading on that area of concern. If you (and your dentist) are concerned about an individual tooth, a scan will be taken that focuses only on that particular tooth in 3D, and the fee will be the cost of a panorex (which is usually covered by insurance) plus an additional $50 co-pay. You will receive a CD of your scan(s) with the software that enables your dentist to view and manipulate the scanned images for their own use as well.
- Is this covered by insurance?
In some cases (such as pathology and trauma) medical insurance may cover the scan. However typically the $400 fee for the 3D scan is not covered by insurance and payment is the responsibility of the patient.
